Hey Team, Welcome to the June Newsletter!
Sweaty armpits and stinky kids means it’s summer! It also means we will be no gi until September for our normal classes. Friday classes and morning classes are now gi. Kids, wear your belt adults, don’t wear your belts.
You’ll be happy to know we don’t have any class cancelations (woot!) in June but we do have some in early July, so pay attention.
Schedule Change, But Not For You
Coach Eric will now be instructing all classes on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. From the mornings at 10am to the raptors, hammerheads, and comp classes in the evening. He’s also your go to for private lessons. Shoot him an email [email protected] or ask him in person to get those scheduled.
Technique: June Butterflies
June Marks the beginning of our no gi season so what better to learn than the quintessential no gi technique, butterfly sweeps? All four classes will begin learning the overhook/underhook concept as these are very fundamental and important to no gi. All four classes will also cover the butterfly sweep, an extremely powerful sweep everyone should know. The hammerheads and raptors will also cover the armbar from the butterfly sweep.
8 Weeks To Excellence
Starting Monday June 7th our 8 weeks to excellence summer program returns. This is completely free for our students and will give the kids an opportunity to earn a special colored stripe and an exclusive gi patch. They’ll be required to perform acts of kindness, discipline, health, education, and community. To get started, click on the link to download and print out the packet.
Competitions
We will be attending the Newbreed competition on July 3rd. If you’re interested, we will be there to support.
Father’s Day Class
Saturday, June 20th 1pm, we will hold our second annual Father’s Day Class. It’s free, it’s a day before father’s day, now you don’t have an excuse. Also dads, if you’ve done it before, you can get another stripe on your belt.
July Closing
The academy will be closed from July 5th through July 9th and will reopen July 12th. Use this time to eat vegetables and read books.
Staying Healthy
This year has been rough. Let’s all remember, if you’re sick, stay home. If you’re not sick, pretend everyone else is and wash your hands! We have plenty of soap, water, and hand sanitizer so USE IT!!. We clean our mats every day and use two different types of mat cleaners, one is a live bacteria based cleaner that uses beneficial bacteria to create an inhospitable atmosphere where viruses, bacteria, and fungus cannot live. The other is a very powerful cleaner designed for grappling mats. It does not mess around and kills everything from the common cold to MRSA. Using two different cleaners that clean in two very different ways ensures none of these nasties adapt to the environment. Keep in mind, most illnesses will come from direct contact with other people, not so much the mats. If you’re feeling extra grimy, pick up an Armbar Soap at the font desk. $5 gets you a specially crafted soap designed to get rid of all the nastiness that ends up on us. It’s expensive, but use it only after you train and it will help keep you from catching cooties, unless, of course, you like being itchy.
We’re looking forward to having fun this month. As always, if you need help with any of the techniques or drills, please let us know, we’re happy to help. If you feel like you want more, individualized attention, Coach Eric is available for private lessons for both adults and kids. Thanks for reading along, looking forward to seeing you on the mats.
